Who's your long, skinny neighbor?

Who's your long, skinny neighbor?

While it's the beach life in Brazil and the finer things in Argentina that seem to get all the attention, allow us to direct your attention just a little west — to Chile. It's got wines to rival Argentina's, and while it may not have Brazilian bathing beauties, you'll see no shortage of natural beauty.

We've chosen three destinations you won't want to miss. First stop: Valparaiso. A glimpse into the soul of Chile, this old-fashioned port still feels lost in the 1930s. Check into ZeroHotel and head down to Muelle Prat. From there, it's north to the Atacama desert, one of the world's driest and most surreal places. The Atacama desert has been used in movies filming scenes from Mars but is also home to the village oasis, San Pedro de Atacama. Awasi will set you up with a nice place to sleep after all the desert exploration and nightime stargazing trips. As spring approaches, and Patagonia thaws out, you can set up your base camp at Indigo, in Puerto Natales, or at Remota, on the edge of the Torres del Paine national park. Happy traveling!
