casa naranja holiday gift idea 4 - samba roots from sambazon

this cd from sambazon is a holiday cornucopia of brazilian music infused with a modern sensibility. the hot sounds on this cd span spanish styling from samba to reggae, hip-hop to bossa nova and are guaranteed to heat up your de janerio groove even in the dead of another dreary new york winter. but this kind of heat isn’t from global warming. al contrario. the cd and packaging are green friendly and all the profits go to local farmers and families who practice sustainable agriculture.

“Best $2k I Ever Spent!” Yankees Win World Series ‘09! Go To Party At 1Oak…

we would not, in good faith, be true, chic new yorkers if we didn't make mention of the yankee's world series win last night!

whether you are the yankees’ biggest fan, or you think ARod is a schmuck that gets paid way too much… if you are a new yorker you will excuse the celebratory crowds for the next couple of days and let us enjoy this win. while the crowds were a hot mess with crazy yankee fans burning philly cheese steaks (true story) and wrecking havoc on our city streets for the nypd to clean up, where did the players themselves go to celebrate? 1Oak was where the after party went down. Who was there? continue reading here

look For less: lovely louboutin — the cheapchica's guide to style

our fashion correspondent, liliana vazquez of cheap chica did a fierce job discovering louboutins for less!

i spent last weekend in new york city with my sweet husband to celebrate our wedding anniversary and the one thing we both love to do while we’re in the city is shop…yes, I am a lucky girl!

While we were at saks I tired on the louboutin feticha (above in black) and fell in love, unfortunately my husband did not agree…he said they looked too “smushy”! I think he was referring to the short toe box which IMO is fantastic b/c it makes your feet look tiny so if you’ve got a big foot, there shoes will give the illusion of a very small foot!

anyway, I left with dreams of all the outfits they would compliment so you can imagine how excited I was when I saw these fawson shoes at Aldo. They come in black leather, grey suede and tan suede and retail for $90 but I suspect they’ll be on sale in a few weeks so hold off… if you can resist!

nonetheless, these shoes are such a great “inspired by” version of the feticha and the perfect pump for work or play!!

fashion alchemy - mango and paulo coelho create solidarity t-shirts

high street retailers partnering with high fashion designers is nothing new—but when one teams up with a famous author, well, you just don’t see that every day. enter mango—the spanish shop where we love to score sweet deals—with a new t-shirt line emblazoned with quotes by paul coelho. he’s author of more than 20 books, including the alchemist, which harvey weinstein is soon turning into a movie. the tees, with graphics that resemble book spines, feature inspirational bon mots like “everyone has a treasure that is waiting just for them,” and “when you want something, the whole universe conspires to help you realize your desire.” at $29.90, a portion of the proceeds go to coelho’s non-profit in his native brazil.

- When you want something, the whole Universe conspires to help you realize your desire.

- Everyone has a treasure that is waiting just for them.

- Love is the key to understanding all mysteries.

- What is the real "I"? It's what you are, not what others make of you.

casa naranja does mercedes-benz fashion week aka #NYFW

you better work!
casa naranja takes on mercedes benz fashion week

| september 18, 2009
"live with reverence for yourself and others." --Yogi Tea
as promised we are continuing to bring you the best and most luxurious ways to make you a better, happier, glamorous and more pampered you in 2009.

mercedes benz fashion week s/s 10
between the shows, the parties, the after parties and all the
requisite running around involved in the #NYFW aka mercedes benz fashion week, you'd think we'd be totally exhausted by now. but thanks to the great energy and the cheerful, chic and covetable looks coming down the runway,
we're feeling a strong jolt of fashion-fueled energy...just the thing to get us psyched for spring/summer 2010.

mercedes benz fashion week

carolina, oscar, narcisco......
while we ran from show to show, trying to take in as much runway glamor as we could, we made sure not to miss a single one of our favorite latin designers: oscar de la renta, carolina herrera, brian reyes, custo barcelona, narciso rodriguez, carlos miele, rosa chà, argentine designer collections who all gave incredible showings.
we absolutely cannot wait to get our hands on the new collections. click through the gallieries and read the reviews: we're sure you'll agree that this is one of the best seasons the fashion world has seen in quite some time.

american express skybox
between that and the posh american express skybox, where we ran into style experts like andre leon talley and tory burch while taking a sneak peek at some of the shows, NYFW was a total "exito".

american express skybox for fashion week

hautelook lounge
and we simply couldn't have made it through the week without the swag, sips, snacks and soirèes in the utterly fabulous hautelook lounge. (a big fashion week double kiss goes out to its gorgeous proprietress carlota espinosa...)

even though coco rocha and alexa chung might be like, triple-booked for the evening, giuseppe zanotti will be djing at his own store and la perla is giving away $50 lace thongs with purchase, it's these following shops that really have it going on during fashion's night out.

in case you haven't already heard, anna wintour, for some reason or another, will be kicking off the evening from the macy's in queens. this, for obvious reasons, totally does not make our top ten list. now on with the good stuff.

anna sui for target private shopping event 54 crosby st. sept. 9, 7–10 p.m. ms. anna sui and, though we can't name names, we hear a gossip girl or two. first dibs on the collection!

oscar de la renta - the ultimate designer-tuned-singer concert. in celebration of the evening, oscar de la renta will host cocktails in his madison avenue boutique and will be singing a few songs for top clients and friends.

giuseppe zanotti - the ultimate designer-turned-dj party. giuseppe zanotti design is turning fashion’s night out into an evening of music & fashion at the flagship store on madison avenue. you will be intrigued by a side of him that no one really knows: giuseppe zanotti will be the guest deejay of the evening, spinning house music for his customers and friends turning the store into a dance party!

rag & bone
guys, this is for you: rag & bone will turn their christopher street store into an

irish pub, complete with free beer, a sawdust floor, and a live irish band. we might just end up calling it a night here. 100 christopher street.

adam lippes
not content to party until 11pm, adam's meatpacking store will stay open until 1am with free cocktails. he'll also have special edition personalized t-shirts for sale, and in case you've missed them thus far—the havaianas customizing crew! all proceeds from the sale of the havaianas will go to the 9/11 fund. 678 hudson street.

even though all area h&ms will stay open late, it's the herald square store that'll celebrate the most. surrender yourself to their stylist and then pose for their "celebrity photographer." your photo will then be projected onto their big billboard overlooking the meatpacking district. 1328 broadway.

kirna zabete
it's kirna's 10th anniversary, so they'll be celebrating double-time by bringing in narciso rodriguez, jack mccollough and lazaro hernandez of proenza schouler, thakoon panichgul, jason wu, and peter som to debut their exclusive items for kirna. want to snap up a wu sketch or a proenza schouler tote bag? this is the place to do it. 96 greene street.

juicy couture
with anna at macy's, it's only proper that
hamish bowles be at juicy, right? he'll be at their fifth avenue flagship to read from the works of noel coward as shoppers lounge in a "gentleman’s club, reminiscent of founder gela nash-taylor’s eccentric english manor (featured in vogue’s september issue)." 650 fifth avenue.

actually hosting two large events at different stores, chanel will cater to both the rich and the poor. at 139 spring street, they'll debut the jade nail polish with free mini-manicures and a dj set by alexa chung. meanwhile at 15 east 57th street, for the first time ever, chanel will have a create-your-own-handbag studio. "choose your favorite lambskin color, lining, hardware, and chain—and be among the first in the united states to own a customized, monogrammed chanel classic bag." oh yes, and there will be champagne of course.

bergdorf goodman
if this doesn't get you to bg, then nothing will: andre leon talley hosting a fashion game show with "teams led by donna karan, linda fargo, and robert verdi." also, annie leibovitz will be around, padma lakshmi will host a cook-off with cynthia rowley and peter som, zac posen will be selling his paintings, alexander wang will drop in and isaac mizrahi will hold a talk. this is some crazy shiz right here; make sure to jot down the exact times for the event you most want to see. 754 fifth avenue.

alice + olivia
right alongside the fashion week tents in bryant park, the alice + olivia boutique will become a photo studio, with auditions to be a model in the alice + olivia presentation the following week. hopefuls won't be left to their own devices either; they'll get pro hairstyling, makeup and wardrobe styling before stepping in front of the camera. here's something for the resume. 80 west 40th street

opening ceremony
in the spirit of chinatown, oc will take their celebration to the streets, with special-edition items sold out of the backs of vintage automobiles (example: a thai truck sporting band of outsiders gear). in addition, you'll able to meet and greet with the designers behind rodarte, band of outsiders, proenza schoulder, fendi, and of course alexander wang. munch on food from neighborhood restaurants and enjoy dj sets by "friends" of opening ceremony. 35 howard street.

as expected, barneys will be killing it during fashion's night out, hosting such famous faces as the mary kate & ashley olsen bartending, isabel toledo, alexander wang for runway lessons, juan carlos obando teaching salsa and more. oh yea, and they'll be teaching knitting and hosting a fashion green market curated by vogue editor tonne goodman. there's too much to list here; click above for all the details. 660 madison avenue.

foley + corinna
burn the velvet rope! foley + corinna invite you to cross the line and mix it up. deejay, drinks, dress-up, and dancing. dance while you shop; shop while you dance. photos will be taken while your booty’s shakin’. shimmerin’ and quakin’ while dana foley + anna corinna will be makin’ you up! brought to you by stylecaster!

spanish retail giant mango will be opening the doors to their soho flagship boutique for fashion’s night out with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a dj creating the perfect atmosphere for a night of shopping. stop off in their beauty corner for a makeup application, then browse the fall 2009 collection with the team of mango stylists on hand to assist customers in putting together a complete look. rock your head-to-toe makeover and dance along to the dj’s tunes at this fantastic event to support new york’s retail market. three grand prizes will be raffled off to lucky mango patrons, although everyone is lucky when they’re wearing the mango name. guide to the top twenty freebies and deals on fashion's flashiest night.

bumble and bumble.
kick off your night with a glass of champagne and a free styling session at bumble and bumble. rising stylists will be re-creating styles from the fall runway by request, so anything from a glam oscar de la renta pompadour to zac posen’s teased french twist is fair game. but are they capable of pulling off dior’s wild, couture-worthy frizz?
savings: $150, the starting price of an updo at bumble & bumble.

725 fifth ave., at 56th st. (212-826-2600)
more than 100 retailers are selling the fashion's night out t-shirt tonight at vogue’s “suggested retail price” of $35 — gucci is the only one giving them away for free to all who attend. we’re betting supplies will run out quick, so stop off early (and sample a few gucci chocolates while you’re there).
savings: $35, the retail price of an official fashion’s night out t-shirt .

131 spring st., nr. greene st. (212-925-9300)
enter burberry's drawing to win a classic trench. brit model lily donaldson d.j.'s, and champagne and canapés will be served. sure, it's a long shot, but a $1,300 jacket would definitely curb our pouting over the approaching chilly, rainy weather.

bergdorf goodman
754 fifth ave., nr. 57th st. (212-753-7300)

juicy couture
650 fifth ave., at 52nd st. (212-796-3360)
vogue editor-at-large hamish bowles — a man who has been known to let loose with some show tunes now and then — is singing noel howard classics at juicy couture. afterwards, snap a few photos in the juicy couture gentleman’s salon, a spot reminiscent of gela nash-taylor’s english manor featured in vogue’s september issue (except, you know, shrunken down to new york size). skateboarding, tuxedo-clad waiters dispel any english stuffiness.

savings: $82.50, the price of a ticket to love, loss, and what i wore, opening at the westside theatre on september 21.

barneys new york
660 madison ave., at 61st st. (212-826-8900)
you may already be a couple cocktails in, so it's time to mingle with greatness while you’re still feeling sharp: guests include isabel toledo, narciso rodriguez, thom browne, alexander wang, and more. hone your signature walk with wang, who will be hosting runway-strutting lessons, or take a knitting lesson with wool and the gang if you’re feeling crafty. and swing by the sue devitt beauty counter — the first 50 visitors get a free eye intensifier pencil.
savings: $171, the price of a scarf-knitting kit by wool and the gang ($149) and a sue devitt eye intensifier pencil ($22).

226 elizabeth st., at prince st. (212-431-5533)
nolita is a prime neighborhood to indulge a free dinner on fashion's night out (or several, depending on how you feel about gorging while surrounded by models). swing by unis for thai food from former nolita favorite lovely day (which was shuttered by a fire last october). d.j. johnny mischeff from the jane hotel spins.
savings: $15, cost of a typical meal at lovely day.

tory burch
257 elizabeth st., nr. prince st.; (212-334-3000)

110 wooster st., nr. prince st. (212-219-0683)

savings: $12, the price of a korres mini gift set.

99 greene st., nr. spring st. (212-941-4200)
